Don’t Get Married

In 1991, I received this retro postcard of a movie poster for 1944’s When Strangers Marry.

I’d been living in Austin for a few months and exchanged mail with friends in Lawrence, Kansas, fairly often. This was pre-email or cellphone, and long distance calls were expensive, which means they were few and far between. Stamps, on the other hand, were affordable, even on my waitress salary.

In this case, my pen pal doodled a face on the back and added his own words of wisdom.

I didn’t get married … not in 1991, at least. I got hitched in 1994. If only I’d taken this postcard advice to heart.
